A teleprompter for your laptop and webcam
Your laptop becomes the prompter and the coach. Record on the webcam, or prop your phone in front of the screen so the text sits right above its lens.
Free · no signup · your video stays on your device.
Where should the text sit on a laptop screen?
At the top, as close to the camera as it can get. When you read from the middle of the screen, your eyes drop, and viewers can see it. YapBetter puts the prompter in a band at the top of the screen and shows only a few words at a time, so your eyes barely move.
Two ways to set it up
Laptop only (webcam records)
- Raise the laptop so the webcam is at eye level. A stack of books works.
- Sit about an arm's length away.
- Face a window or a lamp, so the light is on your face, not behind you.
- Open the teleprompter, paste your script and press record.
Laptop prompts, phone records
- Prop your phone upright in front of the laptop screen, lens at the top, just under the prompter band.
- Start recording in the phone's camera app.
- Start the take in YapBetter. The laptop shows the cues, listens with its mic and watches with its webcam.
- When you finish, the laptop gives you the score and fixes. The video is already on your phone.
This setup gives you the phone's better camera while your eyes stay near its lens. Distances, angles and light are covered in how to use a teleprompter on your laptop.
Does it work on Windows and Mac?
Yes. It runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install on Windows, macOS or ChromeOS. Chrome works best: voice-follow scrolling needs it. In other browsers the prompter scrolls at a fixed speed, or you move it with the space bar.
Can I use it on a Zoom call?
YapBetter is built for recording videos, not for live calls. The prompter runs in its own tab and needs your camera, so it is not a Zoom overlay. For a recorded talk to camera that you later post or send, it works well.
What does it check while I talk?
The webcam and mic feed a live judge. It checks whether you hit each cue (louder, pitch down, pause), your pace, whether your eyes are on the lens, and whether your face is framed and lit. You see small hit or miss ticks on the words as you go, then a full score at the end.
FAQ
Do I need an external webcam?
No. The built-in laptop webcam works. If your laptop camera is poor, use the phone setup above.
Will my video upload anywhere?
No. Video stays on your device. The script text and the take audio go to Google Gemini to make cues and coaching notes.
Is there a mirror mode for a teleprompter glass?
Not today. YapBetter is made for reading straight off the laptop screen.
Is it free?
Yes. No signup.
