How to Write a Script That Sounds Spoken, Not Written

Updated · 4 min read

To make a script sound spoken, write the way you talk: use contractions, keep each line short, put one idea on each line, and read every line aloud before you film. If you trip on a line, the line is written for the eye. Rewrite it until it comes out of your mouth easily.

This post gives you five rules and a set of before and after rewrites you can copy.

Why does my script sound stiff when I read it?

Most of us learned to write for the page. Pages reward long sentences, formal words, and tidy structure. A listener cannot re-read a sentence, so long and formal lines lose them.

On camera, stiff lines also make your voice flat. You read the words in a different tone than you talk. Viewers notice the gap even if they cannot say what is off.

What are the five rules for a spoken script?

  1. Use contractions.
  2. Keep lines short.
  3. Put one idea on each line.
  4. Use plain words.
  5. Read it aloud and edit by ear.

The sections below take them one at a time.

Should I use contractions in a script?

Yes. People say "don't," "it's," and "you'll" without thinking. "Do not," "it is," and "you will" sound like a notice on a wall.

Use the full form on purpose when you want weight. "I did not quit" hits harder than "I didn't quit" when you say it slowly. Save that for one line per video.

How short should each line be?

Aim for about 15 words or fewer. If you cannot say a line in one breath, split it.

If you want to improve your delivery, you should consider recording yourself and watching the footage.Want better delivery? Film yourself. Then watch it back.

Short lines also make your prompter easier to read. You can take in a whole line at a glance without scanning.

What does "one idea per line" mean?

Each line carries a single point. If a line has "and," "but," or "which" holding two points together, break it at that word.

The hook should be short, but it also needs to promise something, and it should match the video.Keep your hook short. Make it promise something. Then deliver that thing.

Each spoken version gives you a place to breathe and a place to add a pause.

Which words should I swap for plainer ones?

Swap formal words for the ones you use with a friend. Your ideas stay the same. Only the words get simpler.

How do I edit by ear?

Read the whole script out loud, at the speed you plan to film. Do not read it in your head. Your mouth finds problems your eyes skip.

Then do three passes:

  1. Mark every spot where you stumble. Rewrite those lines.
  2. Mark every spot where you run out of air. Add a line break there.
  3. Mark every line that sounds like someone else. Say it how you would say it to a friend, then write that.

Record yourself on your phone and play it back. If you wouldn't talk this way at a coffee shop, change it.

A useful trick is to say the line without looking at the page. Whatever you say that time is usually closer to your natural voice than what you wrote.

How do I keep the script sounding spoken once I start filming?

Writing is half the work. Delivery is the other half. If you read a good spoken script in a monotone, it will still sound read.

Mark the words you want to emphasize. Add pauses where you would naturally stop. For more on this, see pausing for effect and how to stop sounding monotone.

Can software help?

It can help with the edit and the delivery. Paste your script into YapBetter and use Enhance. It can suggest text edits that sound more spoken, shown one by one so you accept or reject each. It never rewrites your words on its own. It also adds delivery cues to words, such as pause, punch, and louder, so you can see where to land.

FAQ

How do I make a script sound natural?

Use contractions, short lines, and plain words. Read each line aloud and change anything that makes you stumble. Edit by ear, not by eye.

Should I write exactly what I'd say, or polish it?

Write what you'd say, then trim. A spoken script can have fragments. "Big mistake." is fine as a sentence on camera.

Why do I sound different when I read a script than when I talk?

On the page, you write in a formal register and read in a different tone. Shorter lines and your own everyday words close that gap. Practice reading aloud a few times before you film.

Does a spoken script need to be grammatically perfect?

No. People start sentences with "And" and "But" and drop words when they talk. Aim for clear and natural.
